Painting of a misty autumn morning in the country
Have you ever felt the magic of being in the countryside on a misty autumn morning? Breathe in and try to hold onto that feeling forever.
Description
The misty autumn morning is my favorite part of fall here in the Ozarks. I love the way the mist unfurls into the valley to shroud the hills with transparent caresses. Some years the colors are better than others, but it is always my favorite time of year.

The Pigments
My paints are all handmade. Everything except white and blue are local pigments, and were foraged or grown here at Wild Ozark. These earthy colors lend themselves well to painting scenes of late summer and autumn, and most of the wildlife feature the same rust, browns, earthy yellows and blacks, too.
- sandstones in various shades (red, orange, brown, yellow, greenish, tan, purplish) all yield earthy tones
- dark gray shale from the creek
- garden thyme makes a lightfast yellow
- charred bone, antler and soot make excellent blacks
The white (titanium dioxide) and blue (lapis lazuli) that I have to outsource arrive as powders that I make into paint.
